Questions

Frequently asked questions about investing

New to startups or investing? These answers explain the words on this page in plain language.

What is a venture?

A new business with an uncertain outcome, which people back with money, time or expertise in return for a share of what it becomes. The word comes from the world of investing, as in venture capital.

How is a venture different from a startup?

A startup is one kind of venture: a young company built to grow fast with something new, for example a product, a service, a platform or a combination of these. It is still proving that it works and raises money in stages (Pre-seed, Seed and later rounds). Every startup is a venture, but a venture can also be a new line of an existing business or a company set up for one project.

Why do we say venture on this page?

For a founder it is their startup; for an investor it is a venture to back. At MarapinWorks these are the same companies, built together with founders and specialists for long-term ownership. That is why Your AI Startup, written for founders, speaks of startups, and this page, written for investors, of ventures.

How does an investment round work?

A venture raises money in steps. Each step is called a round: Pre-seed is the very first, Seed the next, and every round has its own terms. On the venture cards above you see:

  • Current target: the amount the venture wants to raise in this round, for example $120,000.
  • Pool this round: the part of the company the venture offers in this round. With a 10% pool and a $120,000 target, every $1,200 stands for 0.1% of the company.
What happens after the round?

Your part is recorded as a share in the company. In later rounds new investors also receive a part, so your percentage becomes smaller. The value of your share can rise or fall, and a share in a young startup usually cannot be sold right away.

What are the risks?

Investing in a startup carries risk: returns are never promised, and you can lose part or all of your money. Only invest money you can do without, and read the round’s documents before you decide. Showing interest on this page is not an investment commitment.
